Moving away from home for college can be very overwhelming or even unattainable for many people. There is nothing wrong with that! Staying in your hometown for college and attending your local university can be just as fulfilling as moving far away for school. This blog will explore the ways to make the most out of your college experience, even from the comfort of your home!

Just because you do not live on campus does not mean that you cannot spend time in the campus environment. The worst thing you can do for yourself and your mental health is to isolate yourself and spend all your free time at home. Although you may think it is easier to socialize and make friends while living on campus, there are daily opportunities to introduce yourself to people and form lifelong connections with your college peers.

Whether this is in the classroom or while walking around campus, being open to building a network of friends and acquaintances is so important for the college experience. Asking a classmate out to lunch or going up to someone and asking them how their day is going, are just a fraction of the techniques to use to begin the journey to forming meaningful friendships.

Using the campus facilities is a great way to spend time on campus. A worry for those not leaving home for college is that they will always be stuck in their house. This does not need to be true. If you make an effort to go to campus, there are many spaces available to you. You can use the library and study rooms to do your work. You can also use the gym facilities to stay active. You can even choose to eat the campus food and eat meals with your friends (who may live on campus).

Another thing you can do to make the most out of your hometown college experience is to get involved in campus activities and clubs. There’s no shortage of clubs and student organizations to join. They are constantly hosting events and having speakers that you can attend. Not only will this give you the opportunity to meet new people, but it will also keep you busy and away from your house.

It is so important, no matter where you are for college, to balance your academic and personal life. When being at home for college, you have to make an effort not to fall into the school-home cycle. Finding a balance between studying and being committed to academic success, while also making time to socialize, relax, and do things you enjoy, will make your college experience much more fulfilling and joyous. College is a time to be independent and mature as a person and although you may think that being at home will hinder that, I am here to tell you that it won’t!

Experience college while remaining at home is a unique opportunity that opens the door to so many possibilities. Socializing with friends, taking advantage of resources, and getting involved in campus clubs are just a few of the many ways you can make the most out of college!
